While our online classes don't require students to be on camera, we find that both students and tutors benefit from camera use during sessions. Students can look to the tutor for cues, and the tutor has another means of checking to see if the student is following along (or getting discouraged, or becoming disengaged), beyond the normal classroom tools.
Having cameras on during individual tutoring sessions promotes engagement and allows the tutor and student to connect with one another visually. During sessions, tutors can more easily check in with students for understanding by looking for facial and body language cues. For this reason, we highly encourage camera use among students in a one-on-one setting.
